Red Sand Culture is a Hip Hop Music and Dance mentoring project delivered by InCite Youth Arts Inc. in partnership with the Warlpiri Youth Development Aboriginal Corporation (WYDAC- Mt Theo Program).
Since the program’s inception in 2007, InCite Youth Arts has invited experienced artists who specialise in Hip Hop Music and/or Dance to travel out to conduct workshops in the remote Warlpiri communities of Yuendumu, Lajamanu, Nyirrpi and Willowra.
Red Sand Culture aims to develop the performing arts capacity in the community, with an essential element of the program being the mentoring component. Mentoring is a proven strategy for effectively producing behavioural change within those at risk, and with well-established trust relationships formed between the mentors and young Warlpiri people, the project has developed a great capacity to create songs and dances that reflect on their lives and talk about the experiences, feelings and thoughts of these young people.
If you like what we are doing and would like to discuss how a similar program could be developed to suit your community’s needs and circumstances, please do not hesitate to contact us.
